Log book [manuscript]. 1840-1841.

The whaling log book of the barque "Africaine" which was commanded by William Dutton from Launceston, Van Dieman's Land, on a whaling voyage. She visited the harbours of New Zealand and surrounding waters. The Log book was kept by John Cole and Edward Humble and consists of entries of the weather, cargo and whale hunts from 11 March 1840 to 7 September 1841. The log book is embellished with illustrations of whales' tails and consists of 340 pages of printed forms bound together. The printer was Henry Dowling of Launceston.
